A dependable wood fired Italian all rounder.

A five minute walk from Minamimorimachi Station, Pizzeria Trattoria LEON centers its entire dining experience around a striking Italian wood fired oven placed in the heart of the open kitchen. The space offers counter seats, tables, and semi private rooms, making it suitable for casual dates, small groups, or family meals. Takeout is also available.

The restaurant opened its third location in April 2025. Owner chef Yoshihisa Tsuji spent about 25 years in a major restaurant group working across overseas operations and product development before going independent. Today he oversees three restaurants in Osaka. The name LEON draws inspiration from the film “Léon: The Professional” — memorable, easy to say, and a reminder of the professional mindset he aims to uphold.

The signature dish is the “Bismarck LEON,” a pizza built around unusually large brown mushrooms, an idea influenced by a dish Tsuji encountered during work in Hawaii. Baked in an imported wood fired oven, the pizza achieves both crispness and chew, with a soft cooked egg in the center that blends into the melted cheese and mushrooms. It is the dish most guests come for.

Starters are varied and well composed, with an assortment platter that includes carpaccio and small warm dishes prepared with careful detail. Handmade fresh pasta highlights seasonal combinations — for example, the spicy arrabbiata with oysters and garland chrysanthemum. Meat dishes are also solid, especially the barley fed beef misuji steak, which delivers impressive tenderness and pairs naturally with a glass of wine.

Desserts follow a classic Italian line: a well balanced tiramisu, a rich pumpkin pudding, and other straightforward but well executed options. The interior is clean and warm, combining the presence of the wood oven with an open kitchen that adds an energetic rhythm to the space. Service is polite and efficient, and the clientele ranges from locals to overseas visitors, giving the restaurant an international feel.

With its combination of wood fired pizza, seasonal pasta, carefully prepared appetizers, and dependable service, LEON is a strong all around choice in the Minamimorimachi area — a restaurant that delivers consistency and comfort without complicating things.
