A former bathhouse, reborn as a café.

Tucked away in a quiet back street near Nezu Station, matcha&espresso MIYANO-YU occupies the former site of a neighborhood bathhouse that opened in 1951. For more than half a century, the original Miyano-Yu served as a social hub for locals before closing its doors in 2008. In 2021, the space was reborn as a café, carrying forward the bathhouse’s legacy as a gathering place and reinterpreting it for a new generation.

Much of the original structure remains. The chimney, wooden shoe lockers, tiled floors, and metal faucets were intentionally preserved, while new plants and subtle interior updates bring a modern layer to the space. The high ceiling of the former bathing area gives the café an openness rarely found in Tokyo, creating a balance of nostalgia and contemporary design.

The menu centers on two specialties: matcha and specialty coffee. The café uses “Okumidori,” a rare organic matcha grown in Shizuoka, known for its vivid color and concentrated umami. Every matcha drink highlights the variety’s clarity and depth. All coffee beans are specialty grade—the top five percent of the global market—and are roasted in-house, with selections shifting seasonally.

Orders are placed at the counter, where guests receive a wooden bathhouse-style number tag. Staff bring drinks directly to the table, a small but thoughtful nod to traditional sento culture woven into a modern service style.

The former bathing area now functions as a spacious seating zone, supported by counter seats and a small private room. Guests are allowed to bring in bread from nearby bakeries, a detail that has made the café a favorite among locals on weekend mornings. The café also attracts many international visitors, and English-speaking staff make it an accessible stop for travelers exploring the Yanaka–Nezu–Sendagi neighborhood.

A historical landmark turned contemporary cultural hub, matcha&espresso MIYANO-YU preserves the memory of a community bathhouse while serving as a meeting point for locals, creatives, and visitors from abroad. It is one of the most distinctive cafés in the area and well worth adding to any route through Yanesen.
