Sushi Yuu

Tokyo

Sushi

restaurant

A calm, honest expression of Edomae sushi.

The restaurant sits in a quiet residential part of Nishi Azabu, behind a modest gate that is easy to miss from the street. Inside, the center of the room is a wide hinoki counter that has been in use for decades. The wood has deepened in color with age, and the high ceilings keep the space open and calm.

Daisuke Shimazaki now runs the restaurant founded by his father in 1978. That long history is felt more than explained. The atmosphere is steady, and the work at the counter carries the ease that comes only from years of repetition.

One practical advantage for international guests is that Shimazaki speaks fluent English. Questions can be asked directly, preferences can be discussed easily, and conversation develops naturally through the meal. The pace is relaxed, without the pressure that can affect more hurried counters.

The omakase begins with seasonal otsumami before moving into nigiri. Depending on the time of year, guests may see grilled shirako or fresh Akkeshi oysters. The opening dishes make the style of the restaurant clear from the start: strong ingredients, treated carefully, with no need for unnecessary complication.

The shari is gently warm and lightly seasoned, designed to support the fish rather than dominate it. The nigiri sequence moves through both seasonal fish and long standing signatures.

One of the most memorable pieces is the kaiware kombujime nigiri. Prepared with Hokkaido kelp and katsuobushi over three days, it delivers an unexpected depth and a clean finish that lingers after the bite. It is understated in appearance, but not in effect.

Kohada is another highlight, balanced and precise in its seasoning. Uni appears with the richness guests hope for, while the later part of the course shifts toward deeper flavors.

Near the end, anago with tsume sauce remains a familiar favorite. Tamago follows, then a toro taku roll that closes the meal with something richer and more direct.

Seats are regularly filled by loyal local guests alongside travelers who found the restaurant through recommendation rather than publicity. The result is a room that stays relaxed and focused on the meal itself.

Reservations are recommended. TableEX can arrange your booking directly, communicate your preferences with the restaurant, and help secure the best available timing for your visit.
